I have a 1977 Trans Am, 6.6, 403 ci, California.

I was informed by DMV that I need to have CHP perform a VIN check and that I would have to remove a cover/box from my firewall to access a secondary VIN that matches the VIN on my dash.

I’ve had the vehicle since it was new. It’s been in my garage for the last 23 years.

Over the last six months, I’ve gotten it back in shape, and it’s passed smog.

Does anyone know what on my firewall I am to remove and whether there are other locations for additional VINs?

Thank you.

That sounded familiar, so I checked my notes and found info from its brother (Camaro - see image).

Unfortunately, in that case, it appears to be behind the core casing.

I feel your pain.

I spent time in the Mojave and, later on, a few places between LA and San Fran and never looked back after I left.

For my part, all it took was paperwork and insurance, and I got a tag.

I wish you well with the bureaucracy.

I have never heard of any such check required by Highway Patrol in California.

If they need to complete such a check, they can pay for a rebuild and re-gas of your HVAC system, which must be disconnected.

No Firebird I've registered/smogged in California has ever required such a check.
